I had not heard the term “dead hedge” before, but my husband and I somewhat inadvertently created one of them on the edge of our backyard. 😅 We had a HUGE very dead pine fall across our yard (thankfully not on the house!!) three Christmas Eves ago. We weren’t quite sure what to do with all of the branches since we couldn’t use them in our wood stove, so instead of having even more piles heaped around our yard, we decided to lay the branches out across the back edge of the yard, as a sort of a low fence between the woods and our yard. The squirrels, chipmunks, and fungi have been visibly loving it the past couple of years!!
Phew, glad it missed the house!! Such a good idea — we toss our Christmas trees out back every year for the wildlife, and an opossum has taken up residence underneath one in a little hidey hole. :)
Excited for all the new gardening recommendations on YouTube! I love Jamilah Norman’s show on the Magnolia Network (I think you can get the show on Prime now), and on YouTube I love Planted in the Garden and the Weedy Garden!
I always love all your suggestions for things to watch and read! My partner and I cancelled our only subscription (Netflix) about a month ago, after they announced another rate hike. The result has been we are watching a TON of gardening/permaculture/chicken YouTube videos, and I love it! Some of my favorite channels are Anne of All Trades, Epic Gardening, Jacques in the Garden, Oak Abode, and Manuel Angerer. Thank you for all your suggestions!
The rate hikes are driving me insane — it's such a rug pull. They have Octonauts and Gabby's Dollhouse, my daughter's two favorite shows currently. But I might cancel it for the summer for a test run — we didn't have it for years but got it a year or so ago to watch something that I'm blanking on and then the floodgates opened lol. Thank you for those suggestions! I love Epic and Jacques and will have to check out the rest.
Freedom Lettuce Gene Pool is a tremendous way to get lovely leaves of many colors. It's bred & produced by Frank Morton. I buy mine from Fedco Seeds. It's OSSI and copyleft, so you can save seed from the ones that do best for you as much as you want.
Agreed that I also mourn the decrease in garden content on HGTV. I suppose it just takes too long to add to the film schedule especially if you need to allow for weather delays, and there aren't the same guaranteed visual results as a room makeover 🙃
Thank you for the garden YouTube recommendations, that will help make my feed so much more wholesome!
Yeah I think network TV in general is going the way of the dinosaur, so they're grasping at straws for whatever will give them the biggest ROI. Gardening, unfortunately, must not be it.
If you like Floret on YT did you know she did a show for Magnolia network? Growing Floret it’s so good. On Magnolia and Max and probably other places.
I’m quite enjoying Fourth Wing. I didn’t care for the court of thorns and roses, only made it through the first one. I’ll be interested to hear what you think
I did see that! It was wonderful. I'm really enjoying Fourth Wing so far, it took me a little bit to get into the world but it's a real page turner now!
I really enjoy Gala Studio’s (great small garden inspiration!) garden content, Hornby Arts has a garden tour series, I love the mini docs that Happen Films does and Blossom and Branch farm has excellent content around regenerative and plastic free gardening!
I always tell my husband after coming in filthy, sweaty and exhausted that even yard work is more fulfilling and satisfying than our day jobs. Gardening is the most interesting, boring thing out there!
Oh! Just remembered Apple Turnover-everything she produces is amazing and her voice is so soothing, it’s like guided meditation.
Thank you for the list of recs on YT! And seconding MIGardener, they also sell great seeds for $2 a pack. Also enjoy Garden Moxie, The Spiritual Gardener, Growit Buildit, Garden Fundamentals.
Everyone wants a piece of our precious attention — I read a great book a few years ago called "The Attention Merchants" which was eye-opening. Even thinking about the advent of radio, then the first televisions, and what an encroachment on our personal space it was with media and advertising. And look where we are now! It's the race to the bottom, honestly.
I literally threw our 22" TV into the eviction dumpster during COVID as I got so fixated on CNN. Now I watch Netflix and Pluto and Paramount Plus. When I told someone I don't own a TV they looked at me like I have 2 heads and offered me a TV.
I grew up in RI and served churches along the Northern Edge of the US. You don't plant before mother's day and rural cemeteries don't open before then either It's cheaper in the long run to vault a casket than thaw out the ground. Needless to say I was busy around that time of spring

So do we!! We call it our Christmas tree graveyard 😂

I second the Jamilah recommendation! She's a delight.
Oooh I will check those out! Thank you, Sarah! :)
Love MIGardener on YouTube! Michigan focused but has so many actionable and easy walk throughs. And thank you for this list!
Ooo how could I have forgotten MIGardener! Such a good one.

Oh amazing! I haven't heard of this but will certainly be picking up a packet next year.

Oh amazing, I will have to check both of those out!
Thanks for the channel recommendations! I'm checking them out! (Also a huge Gardener's World fan).
You're very welcome!!

Oh I love Blossom and Branch on IG — I have to check her YT out! Can't wait to check out all the rest, too. :)
Some of my favourite on YT are:
Meg grows plants, featherwood farm, Murphy’s garden, Northlawn flower farm & gardens, the common milkweed.
Yay thank you!

As if social media wrecking our attention spans and dopamine pathways isn't bad enough, now media companies like HGTV are doing it too.

Good for you! The world would be a better place if more of us got rid of our tvs. Or at the very least, stopped ever watching the news.
